So good, so unexpected and zany, and gets so much right.
Suranne Jones is just so damn good in this! Her Ann Lister is fascinating, complex, funny, genuine: you just don’t see characters like her in historical dramas: neither lesbians, nor personalities with such nuance. The show does justice to an important historical figure and creates compelling drama while avoiding boring tropes. Well, mostly! I could have done without some of the tangential subplots, which were pretty dull. Fortunately there’s enough Lister to forget about that stuff!
