  Purple Rain 1984

  A deep purple bruise of a movie. Surprisingly dark and mean, but also hopeful and joyous. Looks to break the cycles of abuse, while also treating the abusers with compassion and forgiveness. And it makes time for an extended "who's on first" gag with Morris Day. I was really floored by the back half of the film. Not a surprise when the film climaxes with the greatest song ever written.

  So many fun discoveries on a second viewing. And I imagine there will be more on the third, and the fourth, etc.

  I want to start by talking about the advertising for this movie. Warner Brothers has gone out of the way to keep secret and hidden the fact that Ryan Gosling's character K is a replicant. It isn't in any of the trailers, and they supposedly requested that critics keep it out of reviews. They do all of this despite the fact that it is the key thematic and narrative plot element of the entire movie, AND that it is revealed…

  I keep trying to make excuses for this movie.
  "The death of Carrie Fisher must've really put them in a bind."
  "The shortened production schedule really hurt it."
  "Maybe I shouldn't have had that beer beforehand."
  But the truth is, this is just a bad movie. Yes, the death of Carrie Fisher did hurt the film. Her scenes are strange Frankenstein's Monsters where none of her responses make any real sense and she keeps making the same two expressions over…
