The training wheels on LMM’s directing are very evident but the heart, passion, and admiration that bleeds through every frame of this film is so special that it’s easy to ignore the extremely rough edges. I understand why people are coining this as ‘Black Panther for theatre kids,’ but that feels super redundant and wrongly implies there’s an exclusivity required to enjoy this film, especially when it’s theatricality is one of its biggest and most appealing strengths. Garfield’s performance is one most actors would kill to pull off, he’s absolutely incredible and this is easily one of the best performances of his career. Really hope this doesn’t make me a LMM stan now.
