Glad I didn't read a single thing about this before going in because... oh.

And if you're somewhat interested in seeing this because it's on the National Film Registry and/or it's part of Julie Dash's filmography, then I'd suggest you do the same. I don't know if it was meant to have that reveal or if you were supposed to know all along, but the former is more fun, I think.

    Anyways, yeah, pretty fine.

    An interesting curtain pulled-back on…

Felt long, with multiple points in the back third I thought to myself, 'Okay, it's wrapping up now,' only to start yet another beat, which probably stems from adapting this from a book (which was inspired by yet another text). I also really don't think I like how this handles the issue of weight and fatness, and there are some jokes and things that are cringe to watch in 2022. But it's all part of the time this was made, and I'm ultimately fundamentally charmed by Renée — overcoming how annoyed I feared I would be by her at the start — Colin, and Hugh.

Nothing but the cinematography works here. I’ve seldom wanted a movie to end more. The entire last twenty minutes make no sense.

There’s a moment, near the beginning, where some bills fly past Mitchum in the wind, that is legitimately spine-chilling. That’s it.

Watched this via a charity livestream with a bunch of fellow La La Land stans and when everyone was making jokes about the wool coat I knew I found my people.
