The Master

The Master ★★★★

Goodness this was a surprise. I've not fallen in love with Paul Thomas Anderson's films, and had this one down as one that appealed to young men (the likes of whom wrote admiring reviews here through the course of last year) but found it engrossing - the story of the making of a cult, its leader, those drawn in and those around it and a lot more I didn't really understand on a first watch. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman was creepily excellent as the cult leader, as was Joaquin Phoenix as his troubled acolyte.
