Through both the peaks and the valleys of her career, Gina Prince-Bythewood never settles for “functional.” The Woman King clearly follows a crowdpleasing formula, just as The Old Guard did, but it’s never anything less than emotionally and morally complex as the audience gets caught up in its terse, brutal images and its winning, heartfelt performances. Lashana Lynch absolutely steals the show!
