  • The Place Beyond the Pines

The Place Beyond the Pines 2012

    Alex Botchko

★★★★ Watched by Alex Botchko 13 Sep 2013

Great film with solid direction and acting. Ben Mendelsohn is amazing. During the first 2 acts, I thought this might be the best film of the year, but the third act is very anticlimactic. It's still good, but not in relation. The film builds like a book. I just wish I could have given it more stars.

An effective documentary that really bummed me out. It has to be seen just so you can tell everyone to NEVER GO TO SEA WORLD.

I hope this movie causes the downfall of Sea World.

I also would love it if the world lived in more harmony with nature.

Now I gotta go munch on some granola and drink my kombucha.

Oh my god! What have I become!

No, but seriously - fuck Sea World. They're corporate pricks that abuse animals and kill their trainers. And seriously - I am eating granola right now.

    The Spectacular Now 2013

    ★★★½ Watched by Nathan 02 Sep 2013

"The Spectacular Now" is one of the most honest high school movies ever made. The two leads are amazing. I did get the feeling, however, that if they weren't in this movie that I wouldn't have given 2 shits about it. But they are in this movie, and I do give 2 shits so "huzzah!"

So this movie is totally good. I liked it, and you should watch it. I didn't love it, and it's hard to put my finger…

A plate is thrown into the air. Shots are fired. The plate explodes into shards of porcelain. "The dishes are done, Man!"

Why is that I still remember that tiny moment from a tv spot when I was 9? Because in 1991 "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" was the coolest of the cool things!

Okay, but now you're 30. Is it really that good? Yeah, it is.

And now I see just how rare it is that a movie…

    Mud 2012

    Alex Botchko

★★★★ Watched by Alex Botchko 25 May 2013

After the let down of Take Shelter (good movie, bad ending), I wasn't sure what I was going to get with Mud. I thought maybe this Jeff Nichols guy has a lot of good premises, but doesn't know where to go with them. I ended up really liking Mud. It's a great coming of age movie about idealistic love. The boys, McKinnon and McConaughey are all great. Reese "Two-Lump" Witherspoon doesn't ruin anything, but doesn't add to it either. The…

"Life Happens" and bad movies happen, too. Zing!

Here we have yet another movie about 30 somethings dealing with not being 20 somethings, and OMG! Dealing with babies!

Having a baby must be hellish experience. I've seen "Friends with Kids" and "End of Love" and I slept through "What to Expect when your expecting" (seriously got through about 2 minutes before dozing off) and they all show the same screamy baby hell. The kind of hell that takes you away…

    Runaway Nightmare 1982

    Nathan

    ★★★★ Watched by Nathan 23 Apr 2013

Writer/director/star - Michael Cartel shopped around an unfinished print of his movie RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE in 1982. Someone bought it, and released it, but first they added in their own shot on video nude scenes, and a cult classic was born.

The story involves the abduction of 2 "insect farmers" in Death Valley, CA. They're taken to a commune ruled by women where their wildest fantasies/worst nightmares come true. There's out of focus nude scenes, bad ADR work, a far too…
