GotG 2 is for the most part, what I expected from a sequel to the original. Few connections to the MCU, which made it refreshing to watch and more development for the characters to extend the universe.

This installment explored deeper themes on family while displaying other characters and sidelining some. Groot took a huge backseat while Gamora and even Peter Quill had less screentime. It followed 2 storylines of Peter and his father Ego and Rocket, Yondu and Baby Groot. Pratt had less comedic work to do and took the storyline of fatherhood with Kurt Russell. Meanwhile, the other gang held up the comedic moments. Though they were in a lesser dose, the comedy in this movie still sticks well.

Yondu sneaks out of nowhere to be one of the key characters. Drax, Mantis, Gamora, and Nebula mostly have a basic "what is happening" arc. The color in Vol 2 was outstanding and it stood out when the music wasn't as popping as Vol 1. James Gunn managed to make his own movie while sticking to the formula.

Cons were the golden people chasing them down and a couple Reaver moments (not Taserface though lol) and the ending got too muddled and lengthy while the rest of the movie felt out of focus at moments. If the main core could stick together and got more screen time, a sequel could be great. Though not as good as the first, GotG 2 keeps the wild tone of the original while capitalizing on the characters that we love.
