Letterboxd — Your life in film

Nobody moved a camera like ’90s Sam Raimi. You could teach an entire class on visual storytelling on just what Raimi does here in the first 20 minutes. The pans, shifts, zooms, and dollies; they’re wild and frenetic but they’re also totally clear and completely in the service of telling and enhancing the story. And then the sudden shifts from epic horror to goofy comedy; nobody’s ever done that better.

Five stars ain’t enough. It really doesn’t get better than this.

don’t know what it was about evil dead and evil dead 2 that made sam raimi look back at them and decide the only logical conclusion to the trilogy was to send ash to 1300 AD to fight a skeleton army but i absolutely love where his mind was at

bruh... all that squawking was way too annoying for me to enjoy this film to the full extent.

Nearly willing to forgive Paul for the painful dialogue/writing and the fairly wooden performances he gets out of everyone in this because I know he was on death’s door during filming. That being said, there’s just as much to chew on here as there is in First Reformed and The Card Counter, and goes to some fairly prickly places without every betraying its sense of self, and for a master director in his late years… that’s truly comforting.

wtf i just finished this i’m shaken up and feeling sick to my stomach

Perfect example of the sneakily controlled chaos the bros are known for at this point. The last 10 minutes blew me away.

A familiar and comforting (odd word I guess) noir thriller. Not much else not much more.

Foggy, operatic Southern gothic melodrama. AKA swamp giallo. Surprised me in a great way.

the line “how do you like your tea? cream, sugar... or do you want me to pee in it?” is so genius…& god do I love practical effects. a fun watch while I’m sick and bedridden!
