A ruthless, shameless, and difficult film - but also an exemplar of masterfully crafted art.

Things are portrayed backwards, starting with animalistic revenge that would usually be used as payoff but in this instead acts as a sort of inciting incident that pushes the viewer into Noe's depraved vision and the particulars of this series of events. What follows is an effective, meaningful, and deeply cinematic work. Though the violence at the start and particularly the middle is hard to…

Luscious, sensual, rapturous - perfectly captures the feeling of being young during a care free summer of discovery that is equal parts exciting and nerve wrecking. And it does so beautifully, artistically; there are so many close ups and frames in this movie that convey an endless depth of emotion and thought without a word being spoken. And it does so intelligently, thematically tying back to the greeks' views on sensuality and love; unlike so much of recent 80-set media,…

First rewatch, and as fantastic as the first time. Not a moment wasted, not a shot misplaced, not an actor missing a beat. Truly great.

A film that wears its inspirations and ambitions on its sleeve, and in so doing bravely aims to tackle the legacy of both The Thing and H.P. Lovecraft's Cosmic Horrors. Does it succeed? Not quite, but it does do an admirable job of trying. Clearly low budget, it has some truly fantastic practical effects, cinematography, and editing. It's writing? Not so fantastic. Still, it is a lot of fun and managed to merge various elements quite well. If you a fan of The Thing or HP Lovecraft I'd suggest you check it out, as long you are aware it cannot quite live up to these legacies.

Beautiful, audacious, hypnotic, and boooooring. I had high hopes for this movie, but it sticks to ambiguity and somberness to such a large extent that the protagonist is barely characterized, the narrative is needlessly hard to follow, and there is little of substance to think about in terms of thematic depth. Worth watching, but will no doubt be overpraised by critics drawn in by its lofty ambitions and willing to overlook all the flagrant flaws with its pacing, writing, and direction.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant science fiction.

Annihilation is a brilliant science fiction movie about memory, trauma, mental illness, nature, life. Visually, musically, conceptually stunning. Draws and finds inspiration in past science fiction masterworks (most notably Stalker, Solaris, and 2001) while also going boldly beyond them by adding breathtaking layers of emotion and psychological depth. Like those old SF masterworks as well as more recent ones (Arrival, Another Earth, Moon), it is a movie and a work of science fiction that…
