I own Evil Dead 2 on DVD, but haven't watched it in 20 years. I own Army of Darkness on blu ray and have seen it 2 or 3 times since then. I'd never seen the original until now...
It's about as good as filmmaking gets. If this qualifies as low budget filmmaking, I guess all other low budget filmmakers - who, by the way, I support, and good luck to you - should just hang their heads in shame.…
I love Stuart Gordon and what did I just watch?! Quite into it for the first half, dumbfounded by the sensational production design, and the general 90s' point-and-click of it all. But the second half was searching for a third act and never really found one. In brighter news, 2nd Charles Dance in a row!
A hybrid of B-movie westerns of the 50's and Leone's spaghetti reboots; it never quite gels. There are some brilliant set pieces, but there is plenty that doesn't make sense, eg, every attempted shot kills someone, even if made by people who've supposedly never handled a gun before. So it remains a reasonably good B-movie western, but there are plenty better.
