    It’s weird that a movie that repeatedly jokes about Stephen King’s terrible endings ends as badly as this one does. Around the point the main characters perform the Ritual of Chüd II: Bud the Chüd, it becomes even more insanely CGI-fied than the first movie or this one had ever been.

    The Stranger Things/Goonies type influence is what I always noticed before but today I can see the Stand By Me influence I’ve missed before. Not just the obvious recurrent King elements but the tone of the film which mixes genuine malice with kids adventure so well. Honestly if this had less CGI ugliness this could be my favourite studio horror in the last 20 years. They were smart to, accidentally or not, make a film that doesn’t need a sequel to work. I wonder if Cary Fukunaga’s development of this was what made it so much better than Chapter 2.

    I am so happy to see this unseen footage from Superman II that I find it hard to be objective. There are logistical problems to Superman’s solution to Lois throwing herself out of the Daily Planet’s window (why did no one see Clark shooting a red lazer from his eyes?), which evaporate in the Niagara falls version of this sequence from the theatrical cut.
