Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

A badge is scarier than a gun

This was a seriously impressive movie. It has a lot to say about some very timely and serious subject matter and it does not pull one single punch.

The PERFORMANCES holy shit! Daniel Kaluuya is on another level here, he is fast establishing himself as one of the most talented actors of this generation, putting in an absolute powerhouse turn as Fred Hampton. And Lakeith Stanfield! How anyone could watch this and nominate him for supporting actor is beyond me. He leads this film wonderfully, providing a real core to it emotionally. A lesser actor would potentially leave you feeling disconnected from his character but Stanfield pulls you in and makes you feel every emotion with him and you really believe his moral dilemma as his arc progresses.

Aside from the performances though my main praise is that this film is superbly well paced. Not one second of this film feels slow or rushed, it moves forward constantly at an electric pace which kept me absolutely gripped. The editing was some of the best of this last year and Shaka King’s direction is seriously impressive, I cannot wait to see more from him.
