Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains

    ★★★★

Ramshackle film about the consequences of image creation and the trajectories of cultural movements. After seeing what looks like raw primitive energy in a performance from the Looters, Corrine "3rd Degree" Burns decides to make her band the Stains (who've rehearsed 3 times ["but they were long ones"]) the real deal. She acts on impulse, changes her look completely, and says what she wants to say. It's only afterwards that she realizes the Looters aren't as authentic as they seemed,…

Too Many Ways to Be No. 1

A watch, an unheard palm reading, a man wanders down the street smoking and runs into a hood friend. Soon he's at a table with a newly formed roughshod gang, picking up the check and following the crew to a massage parlor. The bill for the spa service comes. Nobody's paying. Right off the bat Too Many Ways to Be No.…

Lot of awesome practical effects too! I see some describe this and evincing a skepticism or even fear of science in the wake of…

    Knives Out

    ★★★½

A ripping fun whodunit, plain and simple. What I couldn't put my finger on in theaters, and is now clearer with a sequel up ahead, is how strange the film is for not sticking the audience alongside Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig). With these Agatha Christie-type deals you expect the inspector to be the perspective. Knives Out has an ensemble cast of suspects, but it takes home nurse Marta (Ana de Armas, very good) as the main audience surrogate and Blanc…

Despite its [SCREECHING NOISE] efforts to employ avant- [SOUND CUTS OUT FOR 4 SECONDS, THEN SCREECHING NOISE OVER PIXELATION] garde technique to discuss [REVIEW GOES NIGHTVISION AND SOUND DOESN'T MATCH IMAGE] sexual desire and past trauma and parenting I don [SCREECHING, SCARE CUTS TO VAGINAL SURGERY] 't think A Hole in My Heart succeeds at articulating any of its ideas astutely.
