Hereditary

Hereditary ★★★½

I'm unreasonably sad right now. I may be rating this a bit harsher than it deserves, but I was so excited, and Hereditary let me down, hard. It's impeccably directed and photographed, and Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, and Ann Dowd are all fantastic, but this script needed a lot more work. I borderline hated the turn it took in the final act. I was completely on board during the first act, and the culmination of it was by far the most disturbing part of the film. For a good while, Hereditary is a brilliantly unnerving film about family dynamics, specifically the mother-son relationship. I was loving watching it. Unfortunately, it grew in to something all too familiar and strangely scattershot. I didn't give a shit about answers or predictable twists -- I wanted this to stay intimate. The focus shouldn't have shifted.

It had some incredible sequences, but I kind of need to forget that I even saw this. I'm so envious of the rest of y'all who had a good time tonight.

Rating: 70/100
