The Little Things

The Little Things ★★★

There probably isn’t anything in The Little Things that you haven’t seen before, a deliberately paced detective thriller with three strong leads. Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto feel right at home in their respective roles in a screenplay that doesn’t necessarily dole out opportunities for show-stopping performances but instead feels realistic, harsh, and a little cynical. The film has a strong but subtle score from Thomas Newman and all-around is a solid production in its genre which maintained my interest throughout. I could see the ending feeling like a disappointment to viewers, and while it isn’t necessarily satisfying I felt as though that was sort of the point. Still, the movie feels a bit obvious in its direction and at a point hits all of the expected moments as I realized what they were going for.  Positioned as a big new HBO Max exclusive, The Little Things feels like it was actually intended to be a smaller and subtler film that acts as a bit of a genre deconstruction. It’s not a must-watch or anything but reasonably intriguing and held together by solid work all-around from the cast and crew.
