Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko ★★★★★

"If this world were to end, there would only be you and him... and no one else." - Dr. Lilian Thurman

I think we all have that film that when we first watch it we are like I wish I could praise and like it more, well Richard Kelly's 2001 masterpiece Donnie Darko is that film for me that I've been obsessed with ever since I first saw it.

A troubled teenager named Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit named Frank (James Duval) who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after he narrowly escapes a bizarre accident.

This film has some amazing elements in it, seeing as I'm in my 20s this film resonates with me for it's coming of age tale and tackles a lot of issues with today's society, the fantasy and science fiction elements are fascinating and I love the whole format of this movie with the psychological and dramatic elements added throughout along with the overall tone of this movie.

All of the members of the cast are stand out with pre-fame Jake Gyllenhaal being the personal stand out for me but all do a fine job with this film, I admire Richard Kelly's direction and writing skills and shows that if given the right project he could be one of the greatest filmmakers today and with this movie who says he isn't?

I love the soundtrack by Michael Andrews, I saw in a interview with Kelly that apart of Darko's appeal and charm is that most of the cast are American yet the film includes great songs by British Musicians and I really dig the combination.

The Director's and Theatrical cut of this are both outstanding, I would suggest watching the the Theatrical first and then the Director's cut if you haven't seen this movie before, it is highly recommended.

Overall Donnie Darko is one of the smartest pieces of cinema I have seen, it's not just a movie it's an experience and rewards you for paying attention. Also I love how funny this film is at times with it's twisted sense of humour but is also very emotional and will tug on your heartstrings, this film has quickly become one of my all time favourites and will never cease to amaze me.
