Up there in my three or four favourite directors so this was really difficult for me.
I originally had his latest, The Fabelmans, at number one but, after a re-think, I have to keep Schindler's List at number one, I still believe it's his greatest achievement. Along with Jaws, Fabelmans will likely turn into one of my default watches whenever I need a lift.
One of Spielberg's biggest strengths is his ability to bounce back from less than stellar work....for example, no sooner does he make a relatively poorly received work like the BFG than he bounces back with the searing drama The Post, the fairly underwhelming War Horse is immediately followed by the highly acclaimed Lincoln which, interestingly, features the first ever acting winner Oscar in a Spielberg work for Daniel Day Lewis. In probably the most stark example of this he followed arguably two of his weakest features in Always and Hook with Jurassic Park and Schindler's List which were, amazingly, made back to back!
