I know I’ve seen many say that The Elephant Man is the least Lynchian film from David Lynch. Honestly, I don’t know where I’d put it on a sliding scale of most-to-least Lynchian in his filmography, but The Elephant Man isn’t lacking in attributes that make it Lynchian. Eraserhead introduced Lynch to the world, and formed the basis of “Lynchian”. Yet, that’s only half of it. The Elephant Man introduced the world to the second half of the equation: the humanization. People are…
Why isn't this out on 4k yet? I haven't revisited this hyper-saturated kaleidoscope since I wrote, specifically, on how transitions are used in Speed Racer while I was in school. Albeit, I probably watched it 20-25 times in a month's span back then, so I've been covered on my watch quota since. I'm going to paste a small section from my paper about the creation of the distinct look of the film, and then the larger section on the Grand…
the fabled Electric Boogaloo
Breakin' 2:Electric Boogaloo delivers everything great about the first Breakin', and then dollops more of everything good on top of it. Sam Firstenberg does what he does best, and goes over the top. He doesn't care about anything normal or any ideas having to make sense. This is about loud outfits, loud dancing, loud music, and loud kids making a difference to stick it the man. There's no white savior complex here. It's all about the…
Jackie Chan comedies span the spectrum from bottom of the barrel to some of the funniest HK movies of the 80's and 90's. However, Gorgeous stands out as special. This isn't an action-comedy showing off Jackie's athletic ability every scene, albeit there are some fun action sequences. Gorgeous is purely a traditional rom-com that happens to have some action dotted in. After all, it's a Jackie Chan movie. There has to be some action.
Shu Qi is beautiful and charming…
I'd give an arm and a leg to be sitting in a full theater opening night when the three boobs come out.
Top 5 coolest things Hollywood has ever done was giving Paul Verhoeven pure freedom for a decade. Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, Starship Troopers. How did that get through!!! I can't even say how excited I am to finally watch Basic Instinct and Showgirls this month.
The carnival creature attack at the end is top-tier creature mayhem. The shot of the spinning carousel with the gillman getting closer and closer each time it comes around is the highest form of art.
I love the design of these gillmen so much. I feel so sorry for poor Miss Salmon having to sit with that scuzzy radio host AND get attacked the gillmen’s assault. Rough night.
True insano ending.
