Judas and the Black Messiah

Judas and the Black Messiah ★★★★½

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

I just watched Judas and the Black Messiah, directed by Shaka King and starring Daniel Kayluuya and LaKieth Stanfield.

Note that this is going to be a spoiler review! But needless to say, this film is phenomenal and you should watch it right now!

Everyone’s performances were top notch, this deserve Oscar nominations for acting no question, the directing was fantastic, it had incredible shots throughout, there are an insane amount of moments of palpable tension, and the music was phenomenal (love the jazz). The parallel that this movie made with the story of Judas and Jesus actually worked very well.

Spoilers for those not in the know of the story of Fred Hampton:

That ending, I knew it was coming, but it was still incredibly powerful. That shot of Deborah facing away from Fred and him getting shot really screwed me up and rocked me to my core.

Fred Hampton was 21 when he was assassinated by the FBI and the CPD. 21!! Damn, if that alone doesn’t make your blood boil with anger for the insane systemic racism of this country, I don’t know what will!

Superb movie, easily my favorite of the year so far. And probably will be for a while.

Go see it on HBO Max or Theaters! I certainly will be seeing this again many times.
