The premise of Another Round could have been led in a myriad of directions. A farcical, slapstick comedy of unbound debauchery. A bleak drama investigating the consequences of substance abuse. What Thomas Vinterberg gives us is a nuanced investigation of our society’s relationship with alcohol. Yes, the film highlights the exuberance and perils of excess, but resists the temptation to deliver a concrete moral judgement – and is all the more illuminating as a result.
