Scream

Scream ★★★

Sure, it’s an uneven mix of solid horror/suspense elements, perfunctory mystery plotting, and annoying meta dialogue written by people who clearly think they’re more clever than they actually are. But if we’re really being honest with ourselves we’d have to admit that the Scream franchise has always been an uneven mix of solid horror/suspense elements, perfunctory mystery plotting, and annoying meta dialogue written by people who clearly think they’re more clever than they actually are.

I guess I’ve always been a bit ambivalent about these movies, and that hasn’t changed at all with this new one. But I enjoyed it for a few well-executed set pieces, and David Arquette giving his best performance of the series—maybe the best of his whole career.

My feelings for the new characters ranged from complete indifference to active disdain, but I think that was kind of the point? They’re always talking down to the original cast and acting superior. As if these new dweebs somehow understand what’s going on better than the legacy characters. But who do they turn to to get shit done in the end? It’s like an anti-requel, or something stupid like that.

Whatever, I basically just watched it so see some people get stabbed a bunch. And it delivered on that promise.

And yes, I do hate myself for using the terms “legacy characters” and “requel”.
