A bunch of college-aged students head to Sweden for midsummer.Β It begins with a grieving woman struggling with the complex relationships in her life, and a suicideβ¦waitβ¦but this isnβt Ari Asterβs popular daylight folk horrorβ¦
Indeed, (indeednβt?) itβs a different film, an earlier Danish teen drama/horror flick and very wobbly cabin in the woods thriller. There is a tense gas station encounter, a near miss with the town weirdo, a montage of splashing in the lake:β¦
pompous nonsense, not quite edge-of-the-seat action, 2 stars for the cat who should have been the protagonist
Imagine how subversive, challenging, and smart this movie could be if they didnβt have guns.
European Cinema Binge #1 (Italy)
I am convinced this is the most perfect movie I have seen. Dario Argentoβs most celebrated giallo film, Deep Red is an impressive thriller and compelling mystery. It features unsettling scenes and an equally unsettling (yet funky) score from Goblin. Thereβs plenty of gore for traditional horror fans, but thereβs a real story and some interesting themes.Β
Argento has a message about women and family.Β It shines through that a liberated woman can be both badassβ¦
