    European Cinema Binge #13 (Denmark)

A bunch of college-aged students head to Sweden for midsummer.Β It begins with a grieving woman struggling with the complex relationships in her life, and a suicide…wait…but this isn’t Ari Aster’s popular daylight folk horror…

Indeed, (indeedn’t?) it’s a different film, an earlier Danish teen drama/horror flick and very wobbly cabin in the woods thriller. There is a tense gas station encounter, a near miss with the town weirdo, a montage of splashing in the lake:…

    European Cinema Binge #12 (Germany)

Daring and obscene, Antibodies is not for the faint of heart. A dark rollercoaster of a crime-thriller that makes The Silence of the Lambs look like a tea cup ride, Antibodies shows fearlessness in its portrayal of perversion, moral corruption and devotion to religion.

The German thriller follows a policeman, Michael Martens, from a small, religious country town, haunted by the murder of a 12 year old girl. The suspect, a pedophilic creep known as…

Great cinematography and beautifully shot. AntlersΒ is vulnerable with a lot of soul, but not a lot of substance to grapple with afterwards.

It’s essentially a heartfelt story with abuse, family and responsibility at the centre of it, paired with some brave monster design choices.

It just didn’t really connect with me, and I was unable to draw connections to the natural and constructed humanitarian threats that the movie was ultimately commenting on.

    European Cinema Binge #1 (Italy)

I am convinced this is the most perfect movie I have seen. Dario Argento’s most celebrated giallo film, Deep Red is an impressive thriller and compelling mystery. It features unsettling scenes and an equally unsettling (yet funky) score from Goblin. There’s plenty of gore for traditional horror fans, but there’s a real story and some interesting themes.Β

Argento has a message about women and family.Β It shines through that a liberated woman can be both badass…

Imagine how subversive, challenging, and smart this movie could be if they didn’t have guns.
