Venom: Let There Be Carnage

Venom: Let There Be Carnage ★★½

Very funny when it's operating as an Eddie/Venom buddy comedy; you can tell that's the movie Hardy (who actually cowrote the story) wanted to make. Alas, it also has to be a Carnage movie, and the film can't even be bothered to make a serial killer with extraterrestrial powers scary. Maybe it's Harrelson, who doesn't lean into the menace nearly at all, or maybe it's that the film commits to reinventing the character as an almost tragic romantic outlaw instead of a truly deranged killer, but this rarely works on the comic-book-showdown terms it sets for itself. Also, I know I'm supposed to be grateful for the uncharacteristically fleet runtime (comic book movies being so excessively long these days and such), but this seriously needed another half hour.
