Micko’s review published on Letterboxd:
I don't know what I expected but somehow I'm not sure it was this. It's a thoughtful low-key drama following the life of a boy named Chiron as he grows into manhood and is shaped by his experiences.
As an adult, he has buried the impact and meaning of those experiences deep inside and built an identity that conceals his yearning and insulates him from his emotional pain.
It's beautifully played, especially by the actors portraying Chiron throughout the various stages of his life. The film is also directed with an affecting tenderness that is refreshing.
All that said though, this didn't resonate with me quite as much as it obviously has with others. It's a well-made film but I didn't feel overwhelmingly moved by the end of it as I probably should have been. Yet as I'm writing this review with Chiron's face gazing back at me impassively from the film poster, I'm not entirely sure why.
