The Godfather: Part II

The Godfather: Part II ★★★★

While The Godfather is long, it has really strong story beats and never feels indulgent - every scene feels necessary - and this is where the even longer Part II sometimes falters for me. The main Pacino plot takes more time than it needs to get to the point, and the flashbacks, while gorgeously designed, don’t always provide a compelling counterpoint beyond just deepening the mythology. The supporting cast - particularly Cazale, Keaton and Shire - do a lot with relatively little screen time, and everything clicks in to place more often than not, but I don’t think the film quite lives up to its reputation as one of the greatest movie sequels of all time.

[Sidenote - this was my first viewing since I was 15! I remembered De Niro in his white pyjamas and the lake scene and that’s about it.]
