beautiful. seeing jesse and celine’s love blossom through pure conversation and human understanding is so touching. there’s also something so nostalgic about this film. even though their love story is happening in real time, the film captures it like the fleeting fairytale-esque moment it is, which makes the ending so perfect and bittersweet

The Night Porter 1974
The most interesting facet of The Night Porter is that the sexual relationship at the center of the film, between a Holocaust survivor and a Nazi (and said relationship is a rekindling of a relationship that occured a concentration camp) is that it is consensual. The audience sees implications of sexual assault from the beginning of the relationship in two juxtaposed scenes of oral sex (one in the camp and one a decade later), but it is only implication. The…

The Night Porter 1974
The slow buildup to Charlotte Rampling's and Dirk Bogarde's explosive reacquainting gets 4,5 stars from me, but sadly the movie takes a bit of a nosedive after that. Still, I enjoyed seeing their masochistic relationship unfold on screen. Rampling is magnificent of course, showing immense vulnerability but also tremendous strength.
