The characters are surprisingly poignant, and every scene has some interesting or experimental element to it that keeps the experience from dragging. The combination of live-action and animation was particularly trippy. As is the case with most Bakshi movies I've seen, the storytelling is a little rough around the edges (some scenes feel long/ad-libbed in a naturalistic way that takes some getting used to since it's not common in animation) but I appreciated the craft and focused satire that went into it.

This was excellent! The structure of the film (switching between impersonation and reflection by the actors) accurately reflected the complicated, multi-dimensional nature of existing/growing as a trans person. I found their discussions about how their gender identity formed and how they related to the historical figures that they portrayed fascinating. It's a really deep, surprisingly academic dive into the personal and performative aspects of trans identity that I haven't seen anywhere else.

This movie made me so happy oh my goodness...the main character was so well-written and cool and there's obviously a lot of love put into the family's dynamics. This was genuinely funny at times, and I love the little quirks the animators added in! Can't wait to rewatch this, there are a lot of details I'm sure I missed.

SURREAL BREAKNECK HORROR HIGH POP ART MADNESS. I've been fascinated and in love with this movie like most, and I especially appreciate how every aspect is infused with Japanese culture; the music, the animation and effects, the costuming, the nicknames, the house itself, the spirits, the backstory of Gorgeous' family, everything has a feel that so otherworldly and fantastic, and it's AMAZING!
