"Sometimes you gotta choose between the lesser of two evils."
Wingard's '80s horror stylization and savage playfulness - although a major improvement from his last effort - struggles to overcome the quality-repellent layout of the screenplay, as the silly melodramatics of its approach to the source material doesn't align with the more intriguing functions and Japanese influences of the thematic textures here (of which sometimes engages with the ethos & irregular emotional beats of the philosophizing). Needed more Willem Dafoe.
